Two bands to listen to

Imogen Heap
Weird name, great music. I first heard Imogen on the soundtrack to Garden State signing "Let Go" and I was hooked. Her voice is captivating and her range is amazing. She slides from low growl to a note at the top of the register so effortlessly that you hardly even notice.

You've probably heard her as the lead vocalist for Frou Frou, an electronic band that was featured on the Shrek 2 soundtrack singing the Bonnie Tyler classic "Hero". I'm not a huge fan of Frou Frou though. I'd definitely check out Imogen's solo work first.

Please, please do yourself a favor and click the link below. It's probably my favorite acapella song ever and it shows what a great voice Imogen has.

The Format
There's some bands that have the amazing ability to bring you out of a bad mood. The Format is one of those bands. They are entirely un-pretentious, catchy and just plain happy. The lead singer has an excellent voice to boot.

Just check out the lyric to the song "On Your Porch":

Well my dad was sick and my mom she cared for him
Her love it nursed him back to life
And me i ran, I couldn't even look at him for fear I'd have to say goodbye

And as I start to leave he grabs me by the shoulder and he tells me
What's left to lose, you've done enough
And if you fail well then you fail but not to us
'Cause these last three years, I know they've been hard
But now its time to get out of the desert and into the sun
Even if its alone

Corny? Maybe, but it's a nice break from the obscure lyrics that every alternative band has to write nowadays.

If you're feeling up to it, do yourself another favor and click the link below. I guarantee that you'll be humming this tune.

Holy Smokes. She has an awesome voice. She goes from a very thin, almost hypnotizing voice to this powerful one. I really enjoyed that (despite the fact the speakers on my comp. suck.)
Thanks for the link!
I might have to give this cd a listen and add it to my collection.

Sadie, I'm happy to reccomend her entire CD (Speak For Yourself). Nearly every track is a keeper. I don't think her other CD is as good, so don't accidentally buy that one.

Thanks!
This comes in handy because Dan and I got some money for our anniversary and we wanted to download a few albums from iTunes for the Pod.

Okay Levi, right now, I am glorifying you for liking and posting these two bands. Cuz they are pretty much my favs. How long have u known of the format? Cuz they are ... my favorite. And its been about a month or so ago that I heard first of Imogen Heap, and you are so right, she is a keeper. Hide and seek, and goodnite and go are my favs from her. But the format, you should check out their EP record called Snails. I heard they werent actually selling them, but giving them out at concerts, but hey, I got it! haha. On your porch is one of my favorites...tune out, moment of crime, snails, oh and so much more. I am just so happy right now that you actually like these two bands. Oh my goodness!!

Oh and i know this is kinda off subject, but i finally figured out that riddle. Im just slow, and I figured it out while i was in valley springs! so , when i can post it on your site, haha, so then u can tell me if i got it correct?

I like Imogene's voice, but not the song. Too mundane, monotone, and "trippy" feeling.
The Format was fun. They sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young doing early 80s stuff.

Amber: I stumbled across The Format on the iTunes music store and I was instantly hooked. I haven't heard the Snails EP but I'll definately check it out.

Go ahead and post the answer to the riddle anytime you like. What did you end up with?

Mom: Sometimes you've got to let things grow on you. I think the Imogen song might take a few listens to get under your skin.

Interesting description of The Format...

Also, you should get the song birthday - the sugarcubes. That song may take a couple listens, but its definitely on my good list. I think you will like it if you like imogen heap. Bjork is the singer of the song. So check it out!

Augh! Bjork! Please, Amber, say you don't like her. I once watched Dancer in the Dark and learned to loathe her. I couldn't understand why anyone else in the movie cared whether she lived or died. Levi ran out of the room in the first 10 minutes because he got so stressed out watching her.

Mom: Point taken, but her music can be really good. She does have an amazing voice and some of her songs are awesome.

Amber: I actually think that I have Birthday downloaded somewhere. I'll have to listen to it.

Michelle, i dont like Bjork. However, i do like this one song. I tried gettting many bjork songs one time, and realized how dumb they were. But no need to worry.

thanks, Amber. I admit I was a little shook up there.

Proud to say I own Bjork's greatest hits, although it's strange--I never listen to that cd. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I have to be in a very particular mood to listen to it. Levi is right, some of her songs are extremely cool. I like her voice--it's unique. She's an aquired tatse. You can't judge her musical abilities by a movie, though...

Yes, Sadie, I can judge it, because she moronicaly sang all the way through it, remember?

All right. Downloaded them both. I'm at an internet cafe right now and they're playing Journey's Don't Stop Believing (classic rock radio station) pretty loud so I'll have to wait until I get home to comment.

Well Levi, neither are my kind of music, but both are interesting.

Imogen has a wonderful voice. I assume she's using a harmonizer effect instead of triple tracking her vocals. I've heard other bands do that with good effects. I kind of want something else though to make the music fuller, like an acoustic or a piano. If so, I think the song would be better.

The Format does a good job with harmonizing the melodies. I think their voices are just okay though. I prefer a rougher male voice like Rob Halford or Dio or an "outstanding" voice like Freddy Mercury.

Oh, forgot to say thanks for posting the mp3s. I'm starting to get stale and outdated when it comes to music, and always appreciate it when someone's willing to introduce me to something new.

Sure thing, Zombie. I thought that you might not be too keen on these but thanks for listening anyway.

I want to do more mp3 samples/reviews too. I'd love to hear some of your favorite songs.
